The village of Imber, in a restricted MOD area, again enjoyed its annual bus service, but this year there were a few changes. Martin Curtis shares the story of the day
Crowds flocked to Warminster station for the annual Imberbus event on Saturday 20 August – despite it being a rail strike day. For much of the morning, there was a long queue of passengers boarding services for the lost village of Imber, extending across Warminster railway station’s frontage and yard.
As a car-free event for the second time, those attending found ample parking available on the edge of the restricted MOD area in which Imber village is situated.
Apart from the lack of trains, several differences applied this year although it remained among the busiest Imberbus events ever held. These included a National Express operation (23X) which was permitted to reach Imber itself, and several other coach feeders were also provided using preserved coaches. With the restricted area normally used for military training, an increased army presence with more activity among armed forces was noticeable – although without live firing on the Imberbus day itself!
