The Northern Irish public transport operator has been recognised for its efforts to reduce its impact on the environment with electric and hydrogen buses
Northern Irish operator Translink has won the Climate Action Award at the Business in the Community 2022 ‘Responsible Business Awards’ in Northern Ireland. The company’s entry to the awards focussed on its Zero Emission Project which has seen the introduction of over 100 zero-emission buses, representing around a third of the Metro fleet.
Made up of 80 electric and 23 hydrogen buses, the first of their kind in Ireland, Translink operates the fourth-largest zero-emission bus fleet in the UK, estimated to remove almost 2,500 tons of CO2 each year, and helping to create a cleaner, greener and healthier environment.
The project is part of Translink’s plans to deliver a clean transport future, achieving net zero emissions across Northern Ireland’s public transport network by 2040 with a view to being climate positive by 2050.
The Judges said: “Translink showed an inspiring example of climate action through driving systems-level change to the benefit of wider society in Northern Ireland.’’
Translink Director of Service Operations Ian Campbell commented: “We are delighted to receive this award and I congratulate the team involved in delivering this key project. The climate crisis is the most pressing challenge of our time and air pollution is increasingly a concern to public health.

More people making public transport their first choice for travel will also have a considerable impact on combating the climate crisis and reducing air pollution.
