Alan Payling reports on some exciting new hotel developments in the pipeline in the popular destination of Torbay which will vastly improve the facilities for coach tour operators and their passengers on the English Riviera
You almost feel sorry for coach tour operators in Torbay sometimes. They wait ages for a new hotel to come along, and then five arrive all at once! Yes, it’s an exciting time for the hotel trade in Torbay which will vastly improve the resort’s offering for the group market. While bits of the English Riviera currently look like they have been bombed, a number of very smart phoenixes have and are about to rise from the ashes; and some impressive and state-of-the-art new hotels will offer another 600 rooms for passengers.
Coach trade regulars in Torbay will be familiar with old favourites like the Palace Hotel on the Babbacombe Road in Torquay – not to be confused in any way with the Palace Hotel in Paignton which is still open and offering first class service. After standing empty for a couple of years, demolition of the Palace Hotel, Torquay, has now been completed and the builders are on site. From the rubble will rise a new five star hotel. The name of the operator has yet to be announced. It’s uncertain when it will open but there will be 248 rooms at the new hotel.
