SWEDEN: Three of Volvo Buses’ new plug-in hybrids entered field tests in Gothenburg on May 20, which will run until September 2014.
Serial production of the vehicles is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2015.
Lars Backström, MD of Gothenburg-based operator Västtrafik, said: “Västtrafik has high environmental targets. By 2025 95% of our traffic is to be carried out using non-fossil fuels and at the same time energy efficiency is to increase. With Volvo and others, we have developed a technology which significantly reduces both emissions and energy use.”
Volvo expects to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% by using biodiesel instead of fossil diesel oil in the combustion engine.
Volvo has also developed the mobile app Commute Greener. The app is free and available for iPhone, Android or phones with Facebook connection. It is possible to earn points when taking the bus to work, or meet friends taking on challenges as well as get suggestions on smarter ways to commute.
