A planning application to provide more parking spaces and resurface the overflow car park at Stonehenge is to go before Wilshire Council.
English Heritage said the work would create about 25 additional coach parking spaces and ensure higher volumes of visitors can park in wet weather.
The move follows complaints about inadequate transport facilities at the site throughout 2014, after a new £27m visitor centre opened. A shuttle bus scheme had struggled to cope with the volume of visitors who were using it.
English Heritage said it is taking steps to address areas of the visitors experience which need improvement.
Wiltshire Council’s Ian West said the transport situation at the site has been a ‘disaster,’ and called for an independent audit to be carried out.
He said: “You need to have somebody come in and assess what is happening. It’s no good trying to build your way out of problems, and this is what English Heritage is trying to do.”
English Heritage said: “We’ve applied for planning permission to resurface the existing overflow car park so it can be used in all weather conditions and also for permission to provide extra spaces in the coach park.
“We await feedback from the council and we will keep everyone updated throughout.”
A record 1.3 million people have visited the monument since the opening of the visitor centre in December 2013.
