The CILT has reported that Transport for London (TfL) has spent £3.1m on counselling for staff suffering from stress, anxiety and depression between 2010 and 2014. The information was revealed in a Freedom of Information request from London Loves Business.

TfL defended the policy in a statement, saying: “Counselling has been found to be a safe and cost effective way of helping staff who suffer from stress, depression and other issues, and in so doing reducing absenteeism and staff turnover.”

TfL said that over 4,700 staff have benefited from the service during this period, citing a variety of factors, many of which were related to their work. These include train suicides, assault by passengers, harassment, bereavement and near misses.
