New Flyer Industries Canada ULC, the Canadian subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc. which describes itself as the largest transit bus and motor coach manufacturer and parts distributor in North America has won a contract extension from Winnipeg Transit for 70 Xcelsior diesel transit buses that are due to be delivered next year.

The Winnipeg Transit network carries nearly four million passengers per month, outpacing national growth rates. The purchase, which utilises the Canadian Government’s Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF), is said to support the operator’s focus on enhancing sustainable transit and transportation solutions.

“We have proudly supported public transportation in our home city for over 30 years now,” said New Flyer President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Soubry. “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue building on our relationship with Winnipeg Transit (in this case won through a competitive procurement in 2014), and to see New Flyer buses on our own streets developed by local engineering, innovation, and talent.”

New Flyer, which employs 5,400 staff, describes itself as North America’s heavy-duty transit bus leader offering the broadest transit bus options under the Xcelsior brand. Drive systems available include diesel, natural gas, diesel-electric hybrid, trolley-electric, and battery- electric. The company actively supports over 44,000 New Flyer, NABI and Orion transit buses currently in service, of which 6,400 are powered by electric and battery propulsion.

New Flyer is also North America’s motor coach market leader.
