Oxfordshire County Council has said it will be more closely monitoring coach parking after complaints of coaches blocking a cycle lane on St Giles, the Oxford Mail reported.

The county council said its officers had visited the street several times but no tickets were issued.

It said although its parking attendants had spotted some coach drivers parking on double yellow lines, they were allowed to do so because passengers were simply getting on or off the coaches.

However, Martin Crabtree, Oxfordshire County Council spokesman, said: “We have instructed our enforcement contractors to carry out more regular checks and monitoring of the area.”

It was noted that coach parking problems in Oxford have been ‘exacerbated’ by the use of the city council’s former Oxpens coach park as car parking for the renovated Westgate shopping centre.

Although long-stay coach parking is provided at Redbridge Park & Ride, many coach drivers decide to stay in the city centre.

City Council spokesman Tom Jennings said: “The county council offers three drop-off points for coaches in the city centre, and we offer coach parking at Redbridge Park & Ride.

“This isn’t always working and we’re continuing to work together with the county council to find new ways to manage the situation.”
