Jonathan Welch visited family-run Scottish operator MacPhails Coaches to see what makes the traditional business tick
Salsburgh is located just off the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh, and according to the 2011 census is home to 1,371 people. This small North Lanarkshire town is also home to three coach companies. That’s one coach company per 471 people, surely a record – at least on the UK mainland? In fact, I imagine that between them they have enough seats to carry every inhabitant, with a few spare. It was late morning as I drove down the one main street – appropriately named Main Street. Having passed the home of Golden Eagle on my right as I entered the town, I spotted the neighbouring depots of Bruce’s and MacPhails Coaches on my left, the latter being my destination today.
