Lothian’s heritage fleet will be taking part in a weekend of centenary celebrations

Doors Open Day and Cavalcade to be held over one weekend

Following the cancellation of its Centenary Cavalcade – which was due to be held on 28 July – Lothian Buses has announced it is to hold the event on Sunday 29 September, one day after its annual Doors Open Day.

The Doors Open Day will be held at Lothian’s Central Garage on Annandale Street between 1200 and 1600hrs.

Attractions include a line-up of the company’s fleet throughout the decades, a bus-themed children’s zone, trips through the bus wash and tours around the garage on open-top buses. The same day, Lothian will be operating its annual Vintage Running Day on service 26, putting a fleet of heritage vehicles to use on the streets of Edinburgh.

On Sunday the celebrations will continue with the running of the Centenary Cavalcade in the centre of Scotland’s capital.

Beginning at 1200hrs at Wester Coates, the procession will finish on Regent Road. Afterwards, the vehicles will be displayed on George Street between 1300 and 1500hrs, allowing members of the public to inspect them up close.

Lothian Communications Director Gaynor Marshall said: “This is a huge weekend for the Lothian family and an opportunity to celebrate 100 years of public ownership with both our customers and our staff.

“The weekend’s events will highlight the fantastic service our teams have delivered for the residents and visitors to Edinburgh across the last century.

“Our Doors Open Day event is always very successful and well-attended and this year we are anticipating our biggest and best yet.

“Sunday’s Cavalcade will be a great opportunity to see vehicles from throughout Lothian’s history and showcase the city’s transport evolution. We hope the city will join with us in this celebration and enjoy taking a look back through our history books.”
