Earlier this year, National Express concluded its Driving Design competition. Angela Youngman caught up with the winner and found out more about the creation of the contest

The iconic white National Express coaches are instantly recognisable everywhere in the UK, but one vehicle within the company’s fleet is now guaranteed to make people take a second look due to the amazing abstract design on one side. This is the creation of a young Lithuanian-born artist, Sergej Komkov, now based in Hull and winner of the first National Express Driving Design competition.

Coaches are a highly visible means of transport, with each vehicle travelling hundreds of thousands of miles each year bearing its owner’s corporate logo and design to a nationwide audience. For National Express, this provides a perfect opportunity to encourage the development of young people via its Youth Promise. Why not use a coach as a billboard for an artist’s work? The result was the creation of the Driving Design competition for a young artist to create a design that would cover one side of a coach. […]
