Alan Payling considers the everlasting appeal of the seaside holiday, looking at why it has been so popular for so long – and why it will continue to appeal well into the future

I have heard some people pass comment on the future of the seaside holiday suggesting that a tour to the coast has passed or is approaching its sell by date. I’m not so sure. Living in a place like the English Riviera in South Devon, I do tend to take it for granted how lucky I am to live in such a lovely place. Many people are not so fortunate to live in such beautiful surroundings. I became aware of how popular the seaside still is a while ago. I was doing some work for a company who at the time had a hotel and two coaches in Torquay. As a resort-based driver, I had to travel north every Saturday to take a group home. I then had to position on Sunday morning in another part of the north for line of route pick-ups for another group heading to the West Country for their week by the sea.
