This year’s Christmas celebrations are a little different – and perhaps more muted – than previous years. We took a look through the CBW archives for a reminder of how things used to be
Issue 1017, 2011
At the beginning of the last decade, CBW had much more of a focus on news than features, and little in the way of Christmas content made its way onto the pages of 2010’s mag. The following year’s issue was the first where festive features made themselves known.
Last Stop for issue 1017 featured an item titled ‘Newport gets into Christmas spirit,’ which focused on the recent unveiling of the Welsh operator’s snow-covered, festive-liveried Alexander ALX400. Coinciding with the bus launch was the news that the firm would be making every one of its buses free to travel on throughout Christmas Eve.
The bus was driven during the festive period by Jeff Smith (dressed as Santa Claus), while passengers were given a helping hand with their festive shopping by two bus drivers dressed as festive elves.
The ‘decker was decorated inside with Christmas lights and a festive jukebox playing yuletide carols and Christmas songs for passengers.
“We wanted to give something back to our customers and the City of Newport and what better way than by making all of our buses free on Christmas Eve?” said Scott Pearson, Managing Director of Newport Transport.
