Tom Druitt, Managing Director of The Big Lemon, speaks to James Day about the operator’s vision for a fully sustainably-powered and community focused bus network

The operator runs its electric vehicles on bus routes as much as possible, but they currently don’t have the range to cover a full day of service. This is set to change with brand new buses and upgrades to the existing fleet

With its crowd-funded electric vehicles powered entirely by the energy generated through depot rooftop solar panels, Brighton’s The Big Lemon is an operator with a different approach. Having now celebrated 10 years in operation and with four brand new electric vehicles on the way, this approach appears to be working well.

The company was born out of a public meeting in Brighton about bus services, which mainly consisted of bus passengers and local residents, along with a couple of drivers. The attendees agreed that they wanted to see services which were more community focused. […]
