It’s that time of year again when bus drivers and buses from all over the country congregate on Blackpool to battle it out at the Bus Driver of the Year national final. Jonathan Welch reports

Traditionally held on the first weekend in September, the annual UK Bus Driver of the Year competition for 2019 took place on Sunday 1 September, with 85 drivers from around the country taking part to see who would take home this year’s trophies. A number of previous winners took part, as well as many entrants who were new to the competition.

As always, the event started on Saturday with a briefing for drivers, at which BDoY Operations Director Keith Fieldhouse welcomed everyone to the event before explaining the course and the rules, as well as introducing the national stewards who are there to adjudicate in the event of a problem or dispute. Paul Martin, BDoY IT Director, then explained the theory test side of the event.
