Nick Larkin reports on events to remember a Cambridgeshire independent which was founded 100 years ago this year

Two events are set to take place paying tribute to a legendary Cambridgeshire operator founded 100 years ago. Morley’s of Whittlesey was founded in 1922 and ceased trading in 2005, having run its service to Peterborough all through that time.

The firm had a huge following locally and beyond thanks to its affordable and reliable service and superannuated vehicles – three former Western Scottish Alexander Y-Type bodied Seddon Pennines served until virtually the end of operations – as did the coal fire in the office. The fleet also included former London Transport Daimler Fleetline DMSs and Leyland Titans, plus coaches, all used on the many school services the company operated.

The centenary of Morley’s will be celebrated at this year’s Fenland BusFest, based in Whittlesey on Sunday 15 May. Now one of the most popular classic bus events in the East of England, BusFest began after a highly successful Morley’s 90 event, which became an annual show.
Classic and more modern buses will be operating on a network of routes connecting Whittlesey with Ramsey – where a classic car show is taking place – Peterborough, March, Turves and Thorney. Whittlesey’s Market Street will also host a display of vehicles. A tribute to the late Cyril Kenzie will tale place with a gathering for former Kenzie’s of Shepreth vehicles.
