The New Routemasters could all be out of service by 2030, says the Mayor of London. RICHARD WALTER

ITV reports that Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says that the New Routemaster hybrid double-deckers designed specially for the city could be reaching ‘the end of the road’ as part of his new mission to clean-up the capital’s air quality. After his re-election, Sadiq pledged to make the city’s bus fleet fully zero-emission by 2030, which ITV says could mean the end for the bespoke buses, which have been in service for around 15 years and cost over £350m.

“By 2030, all the buses in London will be zero-emission,” the Mayor said. “Some may need to be retro-fitted but I think all will be new buses by 2030. It means any bus that is not zero-emission will be off our streets by 2030.

Designed by Thomas Heatherwick, the first batch of the buses arrived in London in 2012, with 1,000 eventually being produced.
