Scottish PLC Awards recognised the operators at a ceremony in Glasgow last week

FirstGroup and Stagecoach were jointly awarded the coveted Sustainability Award at the Scottish PLC Awards in Glasgow, April 18.

The Scotland plc awards, launched in 1999 by Scottish Business Insider and pwc, celebrate and publicise outstanding achievements by the Scottish plc community.

Terri Vogt, FirstGroup’s Head of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), said: “Public transport is very much part of the solution to climate change, however we are firmly committed to reducing the impact of our own operations. Indeed FirstGroup recently achieved the Carbon Trust Standard, which certifies organisations for real carbon reduction and commitment to ongoing reductions.”

FirstGroup has invested £160m in nearly 1,000 new buses, £27m in new ticketing technology and are commitment to reduce fuel consumption through its DriveGreen programme.

Stagecoach Group Director of Communications Steven Stewart said: “We are delighted to have been recognised once again for the steps we are taking to become a more sustainable business. Our people are at the heart of helping us to become a greener business and this award is down to the hard work of our employees at all levels of the company.

“We have set ourselves stretching targets to reduce our impact on the environment and help people in our local communities make greener travel choices. This has been backed up by a multi-millionpound investment programme in our bus and rail companies, from new hybrid electric buses and regenerative braking systems on trains to more efficient energy management systems in our buildings. We will continue to work hard to improve further.”
