The Go-Ahead Safety Pledge (GASP) has won Transport for London’s (TfL) Supplier Award in the ‘Innovation Category.’

The GASP Pledge, which initially began as the ‘Peckham Pledge’ in 2017, from an employee at Peckham garage, was adopted by the company’s Health and Safety Committee this year. Initially a local scheme, GASP is now active nationally and has subsequently formed part of a wider two-way agreement.

The Pledge initially involved rounding up a small, select group of drivers, engineers, road performance officials and union representatives, to discuss key issues that deliver a safe road environment.

The Pledge is fully supported by Unite the Union, and asks individuals who have regular contact with any of the premises to make a series of personal commitments, which covers: passenger safety, site/bus safety and security, attitude and work/life balance.

John Trayner, Managing Director, and Richard Harrington, Engineering Director, were the first two company pledgers in March 2018 and since then an additional 5,500 others have also agreed to pledge, which is 80% of all employees.

John said: “We are delighted to receive this prestigious accolade from Transport for London, especially as the innovation category contained a number of compelling initiatives.
“The Go-Ahead Safety Pledge (GASP) is a shop floor idea that reinforces our number one priority and its successful application at 16 garage locations is an impressive testament to all colleagues.”
