Tribute planned for London Transport’s iconic Green Line brand this weekend as Nick Larkin highlights

A surprise not seen for 50 years is planned by heritage operator Roger Wright of the London Bus Company this Sunday (24 February). Based at North Weald, it will feature classic coaches and buses running from Chingford, Harlow Town stations and Epping Underground Station. [wlm_nonmember][…]

“We’ve been extremely busy getting vehicles ready for this event, and we can promise a wide variety, some not seen for many years,” said Roger. “In addition we have a big surprise – a vehicle in a Green Line livery not seen for half a century. Very few people have managed to guess what it is, even the experts.”

Some 15 vehicles will be appearing including those from the London Bus Company’s own active fleet, which operates many private hires and other duties, as well as railway connections. Vehicle types represented will include RMC and RCL-type Routemasters, AEC Regent III RT and Regal IV RF-types plus the SMA AEC Swift and RP AEC Reliance classes. Ensignbus is providing its 1938 AEC Regal 10T10 Green Line coach, ELP223 and the London Transport Museum is bringing now unique 1939 TF-type Leyland FJJ774.

Green Line was introduced in 1930 by the London General Omnibus Company, which had been setting up a network of coach services in to the capital. The name has endured through London Transport, London Country and subsequent privatisation. Arriva now owns the brand but also licences it to Reading Buses.
