Major strengthening of the A4 Hammersmith Flyover in west London has entered its final phase, with more than 80% of the tensioning work now done and – only three more weekend closures required to complete the refurbishment.
Since October 2013, Transport for London (TfL) has been working hard day and night to complete the refurbishment, strengthening 11 of the flyover’s 16 spans after the initial five were repaired in 2012. This restoration – part of TfL’s wider £4bn Road Modernisation Plan – has been primarily carried out overnight to reduce disruption to road users and residents.
This weekend, the westbound carriageway will be closed between 2230hrs Friday, July 17 and 0500hrs Monday, July 20. Eastbound will be shut 2330hrs Saturday to 1000hrs on Sunday.
The following weekend, the Eastbound side will be closed between 2230hrs Friday (July 24) and 0500hrs Sunday (July 26). Westbound will be shut 2230hrs Saturday to 0500hrs Monday.
The final closure will see the Eastbound carriageway out of action between 2230hrs Friday (August 7) to 0500hrs Sunday (August 9) – while the westbound side will be shut from 2230hrs on the Saturday to 0500hrs Monday (August 10).
During the closures, traffic will be diverted beneath the flyover or onto the A40 Western Avenue, with the diversion route clearly signed. Drivers are however, advised to allow extra time for their journeys.
