AEC Routemaster RML 902 was London Bus Works’ first major restoration. NICK LARKIN

Nick Larkin meets former National Express manager Wesley Tierney, whose deep love of heritage vehicles has completely changed his career

Wesley Tierney left a secure management role with National Express to pursue a dream – of running what he hopes will be Britain’s biggest restorer of classic buses and coaches. He is now Managing Director of the newly formed London Bus Works, which is also carrying out a wide range of services on more up to date machinery at its Northfleet, Kent premises.

Now, including Wesley, the company has ten full-time employees and four part-timers. “We looked at the figures and decided yes, it could be done,” Wesley explained. We are aiming for 70% of the business to be servicing, repairs, repaints and conversions on modern vehicles. National Express is already a major customer, as are several local independents. Discussions are also taking places with several of the big groups.”
