Mark worked for the then-West Midlands Travel from 1993-1997, initially as a member of the ancillary staff and then as a driver at Wolverhampton and latterly Birmingham Central garages. He then joined London Central, driving AEC Routemasters from New Cross garage and is today a driver for First South Yorkshire at Doncaster.

“I always had affection for West Midlands Metrobuses and wanted to preserve one,” he said.

He bought A764WVP from Sharpes of Nottingham in November 2016. The bus had been new to West Midlands PTE’s Coventry Garage in July 1984 and after spending 23 years in service was withdrawn in July 2007 before being reinstated at Perry Barr and transferring to Wolverhampton in December 2007. It was sold to Sharpes in 2008 and re-registered MIB6751.

A two year project saw the Metrobus put back into original condition, but as Mark explained, there was a dilemma. “I spent two years deciding which livery it should go into. There are already Metrobuses restored in West Midlands blue and cream so it seemed sensible to go for something a little different.”

After much discussion it was decided that the bus should be outshopped in the vivid yellow and blue 1984 West Midlands Travelcard overall advertising livery, which was applied to two Metrobuses. “It’s certainly, erm, distinctive.” Mark concluded.
