Regular readers of CBW might recall an article back in issue 1379 by regular contributor Alan Payling. Entitled ‘Happy Days With A Crash Box,’ the piece was a trip down memory lane for Alan as he recalled some of the vehicles he had driven with a crash gearbox, a feat your current acting editor is also trying to get to grips with at present, with somewhat disappointing results so far!
One of the vehicles Alan drove was a former Southdown Leyland Queen Mary PD2 open-topper, BUF 425C, then owned by well-known and respected tour operator Wallace Arnold and based at its Torquay garage. It was driven by Alan, who called her ‘Queenie,’ from 1999 to 2001 on the company’s shuttle bus service from its Trecarn Hotel to Torquay harbour. Queenie also earned her keep on sightseeing tours and private hires.
