Wrightbus has won an order for eight new StreetLite buses from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). It is the first time the operator has purchased vehicles from Wrightbus and will see the highly versatile single-deck buses serving the unique operational requirements on the Isle of Arran.

The StreetLites are destined for operation on the Isle of Arran, a popular holiday destination on the west coast of Scotland. Access to the island from the mainland is by ferry. The bus services on Arran are centred at the ferry terminal at Brodick, from where a number of routes serve both the local community and visitors to the island.

The new buses will deliver improved levels of accessibility for both wheelchair users and passengers travelling with young children in buggies. The performance and environmental credentials of the new vehicles are equally important too, given the hilly and picturesque nature of the terrain on Arran.

Featuring the Wrightbus innovative Micro Hybrid technology, the eight new StreetLites are all 10.8m in length with 40 seat capacity and are powered by Cummins Euro 5 engines. The vehicles are fitted with Mobitec LED destination displays and three-way seat belts.

Wrightbus’ Commercial Director, Sam McLaren, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to win this first order from SPT. It is pleasing that the order was won due to the StreetLite’s strong operational credentials, as it came out as the most fuel efficient vehicle on what can be some particularly challenging terrain on Arran. We look forward to working with SPT in the future and hope this will be the start of a long and successful partnership for both of our companies.”

Chair of SPT’s Operations Committee, Denis McKenna, said: “I’m delighted these contracts have been approved. It not only highlights SPT’s commitment to joining up transport requirements on Arran but also our commitment to making public transport as accessible as possible for everyone who needs it.

“The cost of delivering these services on the island has been vastly reduced by SPT’s innovative approach to buying and leasing the vehicles. What’s more, the buses offer exceptionally low CO2 emissions which is great for everyone who lives and visits Arran.”
