Volkswagen’s has unveiled a new all electric MPV – the Budd-e, the Birmingham Post has reported.

Powered by a pair of electric motors, it has a total of 302bhp and promises a range of 331 miles on battery power alone.

Launched at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas, the Budd-e showcases VW’s new EV architecture, which the company expects will underpin a raft of new plug-in vehicles – including an all-wheel-drive MPV, due in 2018, for which it can be seen as a preview.

The new platform places the heaviest components low down and entirely within its axles lines. These include the battery pack – the Budd-e’s can be replenished inductively or by cable, and VW says it will receive 80% more charge after half an hour than the unit currently used in the e-Golf.

“We want to create a new experience of mobility,” said VW’s passenger-car CEO Dr. Herbert Diess.

“The future belongs to cars that make everyone happy.”
