Adam Bernstein discusses matters relating to staff sickness and absence due to ill health

Sickness is a very real issue for employers. According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), in a 2018 publication, ‘Sickness absence in the UK labour market: 2020,’ an estimated 118.6 million working days were lost because of sickness or injury in the UK, the equivalent to 3.6 days per worker. In comparison, for 2019/20, the HSE offers a lower estimate – just 38.8 million, but that figure is based on work-related ill health and non-fatal workplace injuries only.
