Norfolk-based Equipmake is on the verge of releasing its first brand new double-decker bus onto the streets of London for in service trials. Richard Sharman speaks to the man behind the company who started out in Formula 1, but has spent the last 10 years bringing some of that technology to the bus industry
What does the future of the UK’s bus fleet really look like? As diesel-powered engines are slowly phased out, electric buses are becoming many bus operators’ first choice. The removal of ICE (internal combustion engines) means that mainstream bus manufacturers are now facing new competition, but not the kind of competition they are historically used to. The competition now comes in the form of companies that are highly experienced in adapting electric motors for use in multiple types of vehicles, and even aircraft.
One such company is Equipmake, a name that you could soon be seeing everywhere as its product range builds, and the number of customers using the firm to re-power their vehicles increases. The first time you probably heard the name Equipmake was when it announced that the company was building a brand new double-decker bus for London in the form of the Jewel E, but there is a good chance that you already know the name of the man behind Equipmake, Ian Foley.
