I don’t know if many coach operators ever refer to the sayings of the ancient Greek philosopher, Diogenes, when they’re thinking about the future of their businesses. But given the shortage of young people coming into the industry, he was spot on when he said: ‘The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.’ OK, there weren’t many coach operators around in Greece in 350 B.C., but nonetheless, his thoughts reflect a universal truth, that unless we invest in educating and training young people, then we only have ourselves to blame when the industry can’t find good people with the skills, qualifications and experience it so desperately needs now and in the future.
