First Hampshire and Dorset with Hampshire County Council was the winning entry in the Transport Policy, Planning and Information category of the 2012 Annual Awards for Excellence from The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in the UK (CILT). The awards were made at a gala dinner held at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, London on Thursday (18th October). This award category was sponsored by Tachograph Analysis Consultants Ltd.
First Hampshire and Dorset with Hampshire County Council was the eventual winner from a wide range of entries, and a shortlist which also included Cardiff Council and Kent County Council.
First Hampshire and Dorset with Hampshire County Council have delivered the Eclipse Bus Rapid transit scheme between Fareham and Gosport, incorporating part of a disused railway line. As part of a wider integrated transport strategy, the benefits of the scheme include improved punctuality and reliability which is encouraging people to consider public transport. This has been reflected by increased usage, for example, a 23% increase in passenger numbers have been seen on the Gosport – Fareham corridor. The project’s long term vision foresees an extensive network of high quality transport services connecting Gosport and Fareham with the surrounding area.
The award was one of 15 presentations made at the event. Other coach and bus-related awards included the Passenger Transport category for ‘outstanding achievement in the transport of passengers.’ While the winner was London Underground, the finalists were Lothian Buses and NMI Safety Systems Ltd. NMI claims to be the market leader in the Magic Seat System for carrying wheelchairs at the front of the coach with front entry lifts raising the wheelchair user into the coach.
