A Stagecoach North East driver has won an award for outstanding service to the community following recognition from an appreciative member of the public.
Owen McGuire, who works at Walkergate depot, has received the firm’s Service to the Community award and commemorative badge after going above and beyond the call of duty.
Stagecoach North East has received numerous positive letters regarding Owen throughout his seven-year tenure at the company. The decision to present him with the award followed the latest glowing commendation from member of the public, Di Teodoro. He said: “I travel almost everyday by bus from Newcastle to Byker and it is undeniable a good mannered driver can make the difference between a good journey and an excellent one. Mr McGuire is a kind, gentle and nice person, helpful with the elderly and at ease with students. It looks like he never has a bad day, and makes my journey easy and comfortable. I am thrilled he has been recognised for his hard work and that my letter prompted the award.”
Owen commented: “I thoroughly enjoy my job and meeting the public every day, so to be awarded for doing something I love is a great honour and I’m really pleased. Special thanks go to Di Teodoro and the other members of the public who have taken the time to write such kind things about me over the years.”
Launched in 2011, Stagecoach NE’s incentive scheme is designed to recognise staff for their achievements and attitude at work. The award is given to employees who make a real difference both at work and in the local community, such as raising money for a local charity or assisting someone in need both at work and in their spare time.
John Conroy, Stagecoach North East MD, said: “As a customerfocused organisation we always encourage our drivers to interact with the public to make their travel experience as enjoyable as possible. We have the ability to influence a passenger’s day, just by making their journey a pleasant and comfortable experience. As such we believe those employees who consistently achieve such high standards of customer service should be recognised and rewarded by us for their efforts.”
