The return to normality following the pandemic has seen a surge in the ‘Great British Staycation’ with popular university cities like Cambridge proving popular for weekends away. Richard Sharman takes a look at the recently relaunched City Sightseeing offering in the city

Cambridge is considered by many, including myself, to be the gateway to the East of England. The university city is just 53 minutes away from London by rail and under three hours by coach. Being so close to the Capital makes it ideal for a day trip for those international tourists that are starting to return, or a great day out for families wanting to explore the local area or travel further afield.

As in the majority of major tourist locations around the world, City Sightseeing’s popular bright red open top buses are a reassuring sight, especially to the seasoned traveller who may use them frequently to ensure they see every main attraction in their tight schedule.

Proud to be back

Having missed the sightseeing season completely in 2020 due to the pandemic, the City Sightseeing Cambridge tour did operate in 2021, but only on weekends and bank holidays. So it was a great relief that with things starting to return to normal Stagecoach East was able to announce that its Cambridge open top tour would officially return to the streets of the university city on Saturday 2 April 2022.

Stagecoach East is proud to be the franchise operator of City Sightseeing Cambridge, so the relaunch was a big day for the company. This significant day could not pass without arranging something special, so Stagecoach arranged for Cambridge MP Daniel Zeichner to swap Parliament for an open-top bus to help celebrate the launch.
