London’s Tower Bridge is to shut for three months for refurbishment from October 1 amid warnings of extra traffic congestion on both sides of the Thames.

Nearby Tooley Street is already closed eastbound until 2018 to allow Network Rail’s rebuilding of London Bridge station. Black cab drivers calculate that even the shortest river crossing could take up to 30 minutes longer at peak times.

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: “Our advice to those travelling in the area is to check before they travel and to plan an alternative route, or allow more time for their journeys as roads will be busier than usual.”
