Somerset County Council has started operating its own PCV unit and is now running a handful of school contracts in-house. Richard Sharman visited the Bridgwater-based council unit during its first week of operation to find out why it made this decision

It is highly unusual in 2019 to find a council-owned unit operating its own PCV fleet, but five low-emission coaches – operated by the county council – hit the roads of Somerset last week. The local authority has decided to run the coaches on a number of school routes to help address a lack of competition in the market and reduce costs.
